Become a sustainability scholar
The UVic Sustainability Scholars Program offers paid, part-time summer internships that allow graduate students to apply their research skills to real-world sustainability projects with community, government, Indigenous, and not-for-profit partners.Who can apply
You are eligible if you are:- a current UVic graduate student (Master’s or PhD)
- enrolled at the University of Victoria for the duration of the internship
- from any academic discipline
Work eligibility
Work Eligibility
To participate in the Sustainability Scholars Program, you must be able to work legally in Canada and be available to complete the full internship period. This includes having a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) to be paid. International students must hold a valid study permit or work authorization that allows them to work through August 15, 2026. Please also ensure that any funding or awards you hold allow you to work the required hours. If you are unsure about eligibility or work permits, contact the International Centre for Students for guidance.
What to expect
As a Sustainability Scholar you will:-
complete a paid, part-time internship (250 hours)

work with a partner organization on an applied sustainability research project

receive program support from UVic throughout the summer, including:

orientiation

mid-project check-ins

opportunities to connect with other Scholars

a celebration to showcase completed projects

Internship details
- timing: May 1 - August 15
- hours: 250 total (flexible schedules)
- compensation: paid, based on RA rates at UVic
- deliverables: defined by the partner organization and project

Prepare your application materials
Applications typically include a CV and a cover letter. Strong applications clearly demonstrate alignment between your skills, interests, and the specific project. -

Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2026.

What happens next
- applications are reviewed by partner organizations and the program team
- shortlisted candidates may be invited to interviews
- final hiring decisions are are made by the partners, hiring is coordinated through the Sustainability Scholars Program
