Diversity & inclusion supports

The University of Victoria is committed to fostering an inclusive campus. UVic's Equity Action Plan guides us to promote a welcoming, respectful environment for all. There is a particular focus on underrepresented groups such as women, Indigenous peoples, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals and persons with disabilities.

Our department makes sure that all students, no matter their background, can succeed and thrive.

Within the faculty

30 by 30 is an important national initiative led by Engineers Canada and strongly endorsed by our faculty. The initiative aims to raise the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30 per cent by 2030.

The Spring Forward Dinner is a special evening event that welcomes women and gender diverse students to a dinner hosted by the dean and faculty members to encourage mentorship and community.

INSPIRE: STEM for Social Impact gives women and other students from underrepresented groups in STEM paid co-op opportunities. Small teams work with industry mentors to develop solutions that address community challenges.

UVic Women in Engineering and Computer Science (WECS), a student-led group, commits to supporting women in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. Everybody is welcome to attend their events and meetings

Across campus

Equity and Human Rights is a resource for all UVic community members. They provide education, information, help and advice to build and support an inclusive campus.

The UVic Students' Society has an extensive list of clubs, teams and societies. Several of these support students who identify as belonging to underrepresented groups.

UVic provides accessibility resources through the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL). They offer students with disabilities tailored support to ensure they can fully participate in the academic experience. This can include accommodations for exams, note-taking and physical accessibility within the department.

From wellness supports and initiatives to funding and transition processes, UVic has a dedicated support system for our 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual and more) community.
