Generic Remote Desktop
Terms of Service

The University of Victoria's Generic Remote Desktop is a service available on-campus and off-campus through the VPN. The UVic Generic Remote Desktop service provides a secure and compatible environment for accessing UVic systems and applications while working from home, or working from computers which cannot support enterprise applications such as BANNER or FAST. The service is available for faculty and staff for a cost of $2.00 per user per month. Use of this service is subject to the following terms and conditions, rules and guidelines.

Note: This service stores data on your Personal Home File Storage (\\home.uvic.ca\<NetLinkID>) and the quotas, backups, and retention of this information is defined in the Personal Home File Storage Terms of Service.

University Policy

The use of the Generic Remote Desktop Service is governed by University Policy IM7200 - Responsible Use of Information Technology Services. This policy pertains to the responsible use of information technology services.

Login Security

Access to the Generic Remote Desktop Service is provisioned based on your primary NetLink ID. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your NetLink ID. Under no circumstances should you give out your password to others or allow others to login using your account.

Access

Access to the Generic Remote Desktop Service (remote.uvic.ca) is available only to current faculty and staff at the University of Victoria with a primary NetLink ID. To gain access to the Generic Remote Desktop Service you will need to complete the Generic Remote Desktop request form.

University Systems will continue to invoice monthly fees to your department until a request to discontinue access to the service is submitted to the Computer Help Desk. Upon leaving the university, you will lose access to the Generic Remote Desktop Service.

Copyright Obligations

You must comply with the Canadian Copyright Act and guidelines outlined by the University of Victoria Copyright Office. Nearly all text, images, audio, video and other information created by third parties, including material found on the Internet, are subject to copyright protection. When accessing copyrighted content you must comply with the various conditions imposed by the author/creator of the work. The University of Victoria Copyright Office provides resources, guidelines, policies, and workshops through their website. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the Copyright Officer.

Appropriate Content

You are responsible for content you access through the Generic Remote Desktop Service. University Policy IM7200 outlines appropriate use and inappropriate use of Electronic Information Resources.

University Rights

The University of Victoria will investigate violations of appropriate use as outlined in University Policy IM7200 - Responsible Use of Information Technology Services and these Terms of Service. Violations will be addressed as outlined in the "Compliance" section of University Policy IM7200.

Disclaimer

The University of Victoria will endeavor to ensure that the Generic Remote Desktop Service is available 24 hours a day; however, access to this service may be suspended temporarily and without notice in circumstances of system failure, maintenance or repair or for reasons beyond the control of the University of Victoria.
