Microsoft 365 office apps

Microsoft 365 includes Microsoft's suite of productivity software, Microsoft apps for enterprise. It includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. They're all available as web, desktop and mobile apps.

  1. There's 1 exception: affiliates and emeriti only get a basic Microsoft 365 license, which doesn't allow the use of desktop apps, unless their department pays for an upgrade. ↩

Desktop apps

Requirements

You need a full Microsoft 365 license to use the desktop apps.

  • If you're a student, you already have one.
  • If you're an employee and you have a basic license, you can upgrade it using UVic Online Services.
  • If you're an affiliate or emeriti, the department you're working with can buy you a license upgrade.

Download and install desktop apps

  1. Open a web browser and go to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  2. Select Install and more ​, near the upper-right corner of the page.
  3. Select ​ Install Microsoft 365 apps.
    If your web browser asks if you want to download the file, confirm that you do. Your browser will download an installer package.
  4. Run the installer package and follow the prompts to confirm you want to install it.

Mobile apps

Get the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app

  1. Open a web browser on your laptop or desktop computer and go to Microsoft 365 Copilot.
  2. Select Install and more ​, near the upper-right corner of the page.
  3. Select ​ Install the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app.
  4. Scan the QR code on the page that opens.
    Either the App Store or the Google Play store will open to the Microsoft 365 app.
  5. Tap Get or Install to download and install the app.

Sensitivity Labels

Sensitivity Labels in Microsoft 365 allow UVic employees to protect sensitive institutional data. They can be applied to Microsoft Office files to ensure that only appropriate audiences can access them. 

Sensitivity labels are available for use by UVic employees.

Label descriptions

Restricted to UVic Employees

This label allows access to the file by any current UVic staff or faculty. This label also prevents Copilot from reasoning over the file. 

Restricted to Specific People or Groups

This label restricts access to people specifically named by the owner(s) of the file. This label also prevents Copilot from reasoning over the file.

Copilot Restricted

This label prevents Copilot from reasoning over the file. By default, this label is only available to people who have an M365 Copilot license. If you need to restrict Copilot access to files, consider managing the file’s permissions or using the default labels. If these solutions do not meet your needs, contact IT support to ask for access to the Copilot Restricted label.
