Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on license

Microsoft offers many products that use the Copilot brand. Microsoft 365 Copilot (or M365 Copilot) is a Microsoft 365 add-on license. M365 Copilot licenses are managed by UVic and have enterprise data protection.
It’s not yet available for purchase at UVic.
M365 Copilot tools can help users:
- find and analyze information stored in UVic’s M365 tenant using AI queries
- use more AI-based features in Microsoft 365 apps like Teams, Outlook and Word
- create agents (custom chatbots) that use UVic data to answer questions
It’s not the same as:
- Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (a UVic-managed AI chatbot with enterprise data protection)
- Microsoft Copilot (a personal AI chatbot without enterprise data protection)
- The web and mobile apps called Microsoft 365 Copilot

When will M365 Copilot be available at UVic?
The launch of M365 Copilot licenses has been rescheduled to May 2026. We're using this extra time to implement privacy and security tools to protect the University’s data. Read the update.
Features
Some of the premium features that Microsoft 365 Copilot offers:
- access to your Teams chats, emails, OneDrive and SharePoint files
- summarize and edit across apps
- automatically recap Teams meetings
Privacy & security
Your data is secured by enterprise data protection as long as you sign in to Copilot with your UVic account. Look for the green shield in the top right corner of the Copilot interface to be sure.
Enterprise data protection uses strong encryption and strict security measures. It keeps your information separate from other users, IT, Microsoft and OpenAI.

If you sign in with your UVic account, Copilot stores your conversation history but keeps it private. Only you can view your saved conversations. They’re stored in UVic's Microsoft 365 tenant.
If you don't sign in with your UVic account, you’ll be using the consumer version of Copilot. This version doesn't have enterprise data protection. This means that data you enter isn’t private and may be shared or used for training by Microsoft.
Limitations & restrictions
Microsoft 365 Copilot’s capabilities and limitations are evolving quickly. Microsoft’s Copilot help and learning centre lists some known limitations in each app that uses Copilot features.
