We engage in community research on topics like sustainability, urban planning and health. Our researchers work with local communities, governments and groups to tackle regional issues.

Projects may include land use studies, climate change assessments and mapping exercises. There is a strong focus on social justice and equity to ensure that marginalized communities' voices are included in research.

Community-based research

Community-based research is committed to conducting research with the community, instead of in it. The research process is as important as the results.

Here, "community" means a group with shared interests or a location. The work empowers the participants as community members lead the investigation and create their own solutions for change.

The Community-based Research Lab hosts researchers and students committed to participatory-oriented and community-based research in Canada and around the world.

Community mapping

Community maps are shared views of geography and landscape. These maps tell the stories of what is happening right now and what may happen in the future.

The UVic Map Shop is a community-campus initiative. It promotes collaborative place-based learning and mapping. The map shop partners with community groups on geographic research and mapping.

International activities

Our department has a long history of international engagement. It plays a large role in advancing UVic's Strategic Plan objectives of enhancing the quality of education through greater internationalization.

Several faculty members advise international organizations and overseas governments on development issues. Their experiences are readily shared with students through their teaching.

Several faculty have key roles with internationally focused research centres on campus such as the Centre for Global Studies and the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives.
