Equity, diversity & inclusion
The Faculty of Science embraces the University of Victoria’s commitment to equity, fairness, diversity, inclusion and respect in its pursuit of excellence in teaching, learning, research and service. We strive to create a Faculty where all faculty members, staff and students can feel a sense of belonging, thrive free of discrimination, prejudice and other injustices and obstacles, and achieve their full potential.
Our strength and vibrancy come from the diverse life experiences, backgrounds and worldviews of our faculty, staff and students.
Faculty of Science EDI Council
The Faculty of Science Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Council advises the dean on the development of policies and procedures to ensure the faculty is a welcoming, supportive, diverse and inclusive working and learning environment. The EDI Council also works with departmental EDI committees to support education initiatives. The Council is chaired by the Associate Dean, Research.
Indigenization & decolonization
We are committed to implementing the principles of decolonization and Indigenization in our programs and organizational structures. A 5-year Indigenization Implementation Strategy (IIS) has been developed to guide our collective and individual efforts to support and implement the principles of the UVic Indigenous Plan, UVic Strategic Plan and applicable Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action at the faculty and unit level.
Strategic planning
The Faculty of Science's Strategic Plan (2022-2027) charts a confident and bold new course for the Faculty of Science, and reflects our spirit of ambition and innovation. The plan's central theme is empowerment of students, staff and researchers; we understand that we are all at our best when we have agency over our daily work and are not only given the responsibility to be excellent students, researchers, staff, instructors and colleagues, but are also given support and authority.
The Faculty of Science's Strategic Plan is intended to complement existing university-wide plans, including the UVic strategic plan, Distinctly UVic, the Indigenous Plan and Aspiration 2030, UVic's research and creative works strategy.
