Graduate Student Fellowships


Graduate students from all faculties are invited to apply for a CAPI Fellowship for the 2026-27 academic year. 

 

Overview

  • Deadline: 10 September
  • Term of Fellowship: September 2026 to August 2027
  • Funding: $1000 plus $500 towards research activities
  • Office Space: CAPI graduate fellows will have access to shared office space (subject to availability).
  • Expectations: Fellows will be expected make a research presentation at CAPI during the period of their fellowship and to participate in the intellectual life of the centre.
  • Professional Development: CAPI graduate fellows will be expected to attend CAPI’s signature events, e.g.,the CAPI Asia Forum (typically in October) and the CAPI Graduate Symposium (typically in March/April) and designated workshops (3-4 per year) as part of CAPI’s professional development program.

Application Process

Applications for the CGFP will consist of:

  • a one-page statement of intent and a list of proposed activities during the CAPI fellowship;
  • a 250-300 abstract of the applicant’s dissertation project;
  • a one-page letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor

 

Selection Criteria and Constraints

Fellows will be selected on the basis of:

  • academic merits of the research proposal
  • viability of the academic research plan for the fellowship
  • fit with CAPI’s programming plans and activities for the academic year

Applicants should note that CAPI’s work extends across Asia, from South Asia to Southeast Asia to East Asia. Each year, depending of funding sources, the selection committee will ensure that awards a distributed to support projects across the Asia-Pacific region.

Note: In 2026-2027, graduate students selected as Indo-Pacific Scholarships and Fellowships for Canadian (IPSFC) awards (approximately 6) will be automatically designated as CAPI Graduate Fellows with no further application required.

Priority will be be given to students who have completed all or most of their required coursework and who have not yet held a CAPI fellowship.

 

Adjudication Committee

The adjudication committee will consist of:

  • CAPI Director (1)
  • CAPI Chairs/Associates/Senior research fellows (3)
  • CAPI research projects officer, office manager, or designate (1)
