General safety

General safety programs are for all UVic personnel who require WHMIS or work in the vicinity of chemicals or areas of exposure.

WHMIS - in class

This course is offered in the classroom and is intended to provide an overview of WHMIS 2015 regulations, including the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of chemical classification and labelling.

This course is required to be completed every 3 years by individuals working with chemicals and other hazardous materials.

Please note: You do not need to enrol in both courses (choose in class session OR the online course below).

Topics include: symbol recognition, product labeling, Safety Data Sheets, and incident reporting.

Lab Safety for Non-Lab Workers

This online course is intended for staff, who may in the course of their duties, be required to enter laboratory spaces. 

If you work in one of the following groups, this course may be relevant for you:

  • FGMT
    • Carpentry, Custodial, Electrical, Mechanical, Paint, Plumbing
  • Campus Security
  • Systems
  • Office staff
