We provide guidance and information on the safe and proper use, storage and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials for staff, faculty, students, and visiting researchers.

Laboratory Safety for Lab Workers

This course is offered in the classroom.

The course is intended to provide an overview of the laboratory safety systems in place at UVic.  Topics include:  fume hood use, waste disposal, compressed gases, cryogenics, hazard recognition and risk assessment.

Lab Safety for Non-Lab Workers

This course is offered through CourseSpaces. 

This course is intended for staff, who may in the course of their duties, be required to enter science and/or engineering lab spaces.  For example:  FGMT trades, Janitorial, Office staff, Computer Systems, Campus Security.

Compressed Gas Cylinders: Safe Handling & Use

The course is intended for individuals at UVic who will be purchasing gas cylinders, moving gas cylinders, and using gas cylinders as part of their duties on campus.  It is the responsibility of your Supervisor to provide job-specific training related to the gases you are using in the workplace.

This course is offered in two parts:  

  • Part 1:  Complete the theory online in CourseSpaces.
