Laboratory safety training

We provide guidance and information on the safe and proper use, storage and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials for staff, faculty, students, and visiting researchers.

Which Laboratory safety course(s) do I need?

WHMIS - in class

The course is required to be completed every 3 years by faculty, staff, and those individuals working with chemicals and other hazardous materials; and is a pre-requisite to Laboratory Safety for Lab Workers.

This course is offered in the classroom and is intended to provide an overview of WHMIS 2015 regulations, including the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of chemical classification and labelling. 

Please note: You do not need to enrol in both courses (choose in class session OR the online course below).

This online course is intended to provide an overview of WHMIS 2015 regulations and includes the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of chemical classification and labelling.

Topics include: symbol recognition, product labeling, Safety Data Sheets, and incident reporting.  

Please note: You do not need to enrol in both courses (choose the online course OR the in class session, when offered).

Part 1 - Laboratory Safety for Lab Workers - online

This course is intended for individuals who will be working under supervision in labs.

The course provides an overview of laboratory safety systems in place at the University of Victoria. Topics include: fume hood use, waste disposal, compresses gases, cryogenics, hazard recognition and risk assessment. 

Note: Individuals who will be working independently in labs are also expected to complete the Part 2 in class Lab Safety session, when offered at the beginning of each term.

Part 2 - Laboratory Safety for Lab Workers - in class

This course is offered in the classroom and is intended for individuals who will be working independently in the labs. 

Completion of the online Part 1 Laboratory Safety online course is a prerequisite.

Topics covered will include:  hazardous waste disposal, hazard and risk assessment, and chemical storage.

Part 1 - Compressed Gas Cylinders: Safe Handling & Use - online

Part 1 is intended for individuals at UVic who will be purchasing gas cylinders, moving gas cylinders, and using gas cylinders as part of their duties on campus.  

Note: Individuals who will be working independently in labs are also expected to complete the Part 2 in class Lab Safety session, when offered at the beginning of each term.
