The UVic Global Community was invited by Geography’s staff member and cartographer, Ken Josephson, Community-Engaged Learning Coordinator, Rhianna Nagel, and Assistant Professor & Special Advisor on Community-Engaged Scholarship, Crystal Tremblay, to collaborate with the Community Mapping class (Geography 380) to co-create a community mapping project!

The Community Mapping class (Geography 380) provides an experiential community-engaged learning opportunity for students and community partners to collaborate on real-world initiatives with a broad focus on sustainability, planning, conservation, cultural and social equity, inclusion and much more.

This semester, a group of students from the class are partnering with the UVic Global Community to capture important sites of interest to UVic’s international community. On February 7th, 2019, the teams brought maps, stickers, and questions to the SUB, Bob Wright, the University Centre, McPherson Library & the Fine Arts Building to engage the UVic campus and collect their data!

Questions included where do you go to eat on campus, what is your favourite study spot, and where do you feel most welcomed on campus. UVic students and staff were asked to places stickers on the maps that corresponded with their answers and share stories about their favourite places. We are looking forward to seeing the results of this great project!
