Would you like to learn more about the work Nurse Practitioners do in providing healthcare in our communities? Are you a community member interested in getting involved with our program to help educate the next generation of Nurse Practitioners? Read on for one-of-a-kind opportunities.

A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an independent primary care provider, similar to a family physician. NPs care for you and your family, diagnosing and treating health conditions across the lifespan. They perform examinations, order tests, prescribe medications, develop care plans, and refer to specialists as needed. Some NPs work in more specialized areas of care such as cardiology, orthopedics, or emergency departments.

Nurse Practitioners are nurses who have completed a master’s degree as advanced practice nurses and have met professional licensing requirements of the body that regulates the profession in British Columbia, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.

About Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Clinics in British Columbia

Members of the community contribute to the Nurse Practitioner Program as Volunteer Patients and as Standardized Patients.

Volunteer Patients attend in-person education sessions to meet with small groups of NP students to discuss the Volunteer Patient’s real-life health conditions.

Standardized Patients portray the patient in educational simulations – highly structured role-playing events that help student Nurse Practitioners develop and refine their skills in a safe and controlled environment.
