Dr. Brenda Mishak

Biography

My personal and professional journey started in northern Saskatchewan. My maternal side French/ Cree Métis roots are in the Red River Settlement, I am a member of the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, Local 7.  My paternal side arrived in Canada in 1938, my dad was born the following year as first generation Canadian.  I was raised in rural Saskatchewan on a small mixed farm. From a young age I had strong women instill in me the importance of an education and the difference an education would provide in my life path.  I worked full time while earning each degree. First as an undergrad as a grocery clerk, during my masters as a nurse educator, then during my PhD as a Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer.  I feel honored to be in this position of sharing my professional journey from rural public health nursing, northern nursing, and nurse educator.  I am beyond thrilled to join the School of Nursing as tenured associate professor. My program of research in addressing housing security is rooted in the principles of community, public health and the intersectionality of the social determinates of health.
