Composition and Theory

The composition and theory section has a reputation for experimentation, innovation, and theoretical rigour. Composition students receive three years of private lessons, and classroom instruction in digital technologies. Contemporary theory and analysis are an essential part of the program.

Our faculty are accomplished professionals involved in the creation and research of music composition. Their works are performed at major festivals and concert venues both nationally and internationally. We frequently invite guest composers and sound artists to give workshops, lessons and presentations.

Many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers as composers, educators, and arts administrators, winning prestigious awards at national and international levels.

As a student composer at UVic, you'll have the opportunity to hear your music performed at:

  • composer concerts
  • workshops
  • reading sessions with guest artists
  • the annual West Coast Student Composers Symposium
  • the annual UVic Orchestra Reading Session
