Campus Cycling Plan Implementation - Tree Removal - CARSA building and parking lot 7A

Location: As shown on attached map.

Description: Tree removal will take place near Vikes Way and parking lot 7A in preparation for the construction of a new bike lane and pedestrian pathway near the Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA), as part of the Campus Cycling Plan implementation.

The tree removal will take place on December 1st. Two areas, one area just north of McKenzie Avenue and Parking lot 7A and one just south of the intersection of McKenzie and Vikes Way will be blocked off to complete this work (as shown on attached map). Please respect the directions of safety officers and signage during this activity.

Ecological Restoration: The university is committed to protecting and managing the ecological diversity of the natural areas on campus and meets the District of Saanich’s requirements for tree replacement, as applicable. In accordance with BC laws, the university coordinates tree removal with a consulting biologist to understand and/or minimize any possible wildlife impacts associated with the removal of trees.

Expanding the bike lane network: As part of the Campus Cycling Plan, the Dawnview Crescent CARSA Pathway will formalize and improve an existing cycling and pedestrian connection that many students and community members use to travel to and from the Gordon Head neighbourhood located to the north of campus.

Active transportation infrastructure helps UVic to meet the objectives of our new Climate and Sustainability Action Plan – including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.
