Tsunami

The UVic campus is not in the tsunami inundation zone—but many in our campus community live, work or travel through nearby coastal areas that are potentially at risk during a tsunami event.

A tsunami can follow a strong or long-lasting earthquake. It is important to know how to recognize the signs and where to go if you’re near the coast.

What to do

If you are on campus: No action is needed. The UVic campus is safe from tsunamis and sits well above the tsunami hazard zone.

If you are off campus and near the coast during a strong or long earthquake:

  • Move to higher ground immediately. Do not wait for official warnings or alarms.
  • Know your evacuation routes before a tsunami happens. Don't wait until a warning is issued to figure out where to go.
  • Follow instructions provided by local and provincial emergency officials. The Alert Ready emergency notification system may be used by emergency officials if a Tsunami Warning is issued.
