Natural gas leak

Natural gas leaks are rare but potentially dangerous. Natural gas is highly flammable and even a small spark can cause a fire or explosion.

Natural gas smells like rotten eggs—a strong warning sign to act quickly.

What to do

  • Call Campus Security at 250-721-7599.
  • Give exact location: building name/number and room number.
  • Follow instructions from Campus Security and emergency personnel.
  • If unsafe, evacuate the building using the nearest safe exit.
  • Go to your Building Emergency Assembly Point(s) if they are deemed to be in a safe location during the natural gas leak.
  • If asked by emergency personnel, assist with word-of-mouth building evacuation.

What not to do

  • Do not pull the fire alarm. Alarms and electrical systems can create sparks.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • If evacuated, do not re-enter building until directed by emergency personnel.
