Poisonous mushrooms

Death cap mushrooms are extremely poisonous to humans and animals if eaten. They can cause severe liver and kidney damage and, in some cases, death. These mushrooms are found in many areas across the Capital Region, including UVic.

What to do if you think you’ve eaten one

  • Get medical help right away. Go to a hospital emergency room—do not wait.
  • Bring a sample of the mushroom (if possible) and note where it was found. Early treatment can save your life.

Symptoms to watch for

  • 8–12 hours after ingestion: nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure.
  • After 24 hours: symptoms may go away and you may feel fine for up to 72 hours.
  • 3–6 days after ingestion: signs of liver and kidney damage may appear.
