Hazardous materials

Many buildings at UVic contain hazardous materials—such as chemicals, biological agents and compressed gases—used in teaching and research. If a spill happens near you, follow these steps to keep yourself and others safe.

What to do if the spill is unsafe to handle

  • Call Campus Security at 250-721-7599.
  • Call 911 if there are injuries or risk of fire/explosion.
  • Do not operate equipment, light switches or electronics near the spill.
  • Warn others nearby and prevent them from entering the area.
  • If toxic materials spread, evacuate the immediate area using the nearest safe exit. Go to your Building Emergency Assembly Point(s).

Support & training from OHSE

UVic’s Occupational Health, Safety & Environment (OHSE) department provides a variety of regulatory and general safety training and education for UVic students and employees in support of research, teaching and university operations.

They offer training in:

  • WHMIS
  • Lab safety (for lab and non-lab workers)
  • Biosafety, blood-borne pathogens, radiation safety and more

These programs are essential for anyone handling hazardous materials or working in labs.

Go to the OHSE website to learn more or register for training.
