Power outage

Electrical power outages may happen on their own or as part of another emergency, like an earthquake or damaging storm. Most are brief. However, longer outages can impact building safety and disrupt key life safety systems.

What to do

  • Turn off and unplug sensitive electronics (e.g., computers, lab equipment).
  • In science labs:
    • Secure experiments.
    • Shut off research gases, if safe to do so.
  • If unsafe, evacuate the building using the nearest safe exit. Do not use elevators.
  • Go to your Building Emergency Assembly Point(s).

Don’t wait for someone to tell you to leave—if the building feels unsafe, evacuate.
