MP Will Greaves Visits UVic Science Venture Camps

Member of Parliament Will Greaves visited the University of Victoria's Science Venture camps this month, getting a firsthand look at how hands-on STEM learning is inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technology leaders.

During his visit, Greaves toured several camps, meeting campers and instructors as they worked on a range of projects. At the Ocean Explorers camp, students tested model boats they had designed and built. In the STEM-U lab, campers experimented with chlorophyll while learning about photosynthesis and plant science. He then visited AstroLab camp, where students designed and launched bottle rockets, and had the opportunity to launch one himself.  The MegaMakers camp showcased students designing and building their own working pinball machines, while participants in the Unity Game Development camp demonstrated the video games they are creating as they learn programming and game design.

Science Venture offers a unique camp experience by bringing young people into real university classrooms, maker spaces, and laboratories at UVic. Led by undergraduate and graduate students in engineering, computer science, and the sciences, the programs make STEM approachable through hands-on learning, creativity, and problem-solving, while giving campers a chance to experience campus life and see themselves in future STEM careers.

Beyond its summer camps, Science Venture reaches thousands of K–12 students each year through coding programs, school workshops, and Indigenous outreach initiatives in communities across British Columbia, helping make STEM education more accessible, engaging, and inclusive.

Greaves' visit highlighted the important role that programs like Science Venture play in fostering curiosity and confidence, giving students opportunities to learn by doing while discovering the possibilities that science, engineering, and technology can offer.
