Rendering of ECSE

A rich legacy. A new chapter.

ECS has a rich history of over 40 years, deep community connections, and a growing track record of impact.

This is the first shared vision since the coming together of Engineering and Computer Science, reflecting what we have inherited from two strong traditions, and what we now build together with intention and care.

A moment of profound change.

Accelerating technological disruption, climate instability, geopolitical uncertainty, and deepening social inequities are reshaping how societies learn, work, and govern themselves.

Engineers and computer scientists must respond with technical solutions, and lead with judgment, ethics, and care. This plan is our response to that moment.

Territory acknowledgement

We acknowledge and respect the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples on whose territory the university stands, and the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day.

Graduating Citizens of the Earth

Located on the lands of the Ləʷəŋən Peoples, ECS understands Citizenship of the Earth as a responsibility grounded in place, relationship, and respect.

Our shared goal is to graduate engineers and computer scientists who possess core technical skills, and who recognize their work as interconnected with land, community, and future generations.

This commitment extends beyond curriculum into how the Faculty plans and operates, embedding sustainable and responsible decision-making across all that we do.

Our mission statement

"To advance the fields of engineering and computer science through transformative education, research excellence, and innovation that serves both people and the planet."

We empower students, staff, faculty, and local communities to co-develop technologies and knowledge that strengthen communities, drive sustainable and just progress, and shape a better future for British Columbia, Canada, and the world.

Four areas of focus

Empowering, Sustainable, & Transformative Faculty Culture

Cultivating an inclusive and forward-looking Faculty culture where everyone is empowered to lead, collaborate, and innovate.

Learning & Teaching Environments Fit for Future Generations

Designing innovative learning experiences driven by the evolving needs of society.

Enhanced Knowledge Generation and Research Capacity

Building an integrated research ecosystem where ideas grow into leading solutions.

Partnerships Beyond Existing Boundaries

Fostering a network of people-centered engagements that connect ideas and impact.

Together, these four areas of focus call us to build more than just programs, spaces, or partnerships. They ask us to shape a Faculty that is courageous in its values, generous in its relationships, and intentional in its impact, preparing engineers and computer scientists not just to succeed in the world as it is, but to help shape the world as it ought to be.

Our commitments to land & people

How this plan was developed

Shaped by community engagement and built from community voices, this plan was developed through key informant interviews, in-person and virtual sessions with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and industry partners, a community-wide survey, and environmental scans of peer institutions across Canada.

We invite you to explore the full plan, connect with us, and join us as we work together to bring this vision to life.
