Pioneering the Quantum Frontier: Hausi Müller’s Vision for the Future of Computing

Hausi A. Müller, Professor of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science at UVic and IEEE Life Senior Member, has been a key figure in bringing quantum computing into the mainstream of engineering disciplines over the past decade. He spearheaded the creation of IEEE’s quantum‐focused initiatives, starting with the Future Directions Quantum Initiative in 2019 and evolving into the Quantum Technical Community, and helped found the IEEE International Conference on Quantum Computing and Engineering (QCE) as part of IEEE Quantum Week.
Müller, originally inspired by software engineering studies at ETH Zurich and Rice University, calls quantum computing the "kid in a candy store" for its ability to rapidly simulate phenomena like molecules, potentially transforming fields from drug discovery to AI. He continues to champion the interdisciplinary education of quantum professionals by promoting skills across linear algebra, quantum error correction, pulse control, and plays a central role in leading IEEE Quantum Week 2025 (31 August–5 September in Albuquerque), showcasing his dedication to building a thriving quantum computing community.
