Engineering and Computer Science in the community

We're excited about computer science and engineering, and we want to share that enthusiasm through our outreach programs. Outreach programs like Engineers Without Borders and Science Venture promote science, engineering and technology to youth across Vancouver Island. They offer high-quality, hands-on workshops, summer camp programs, in-school workshops and community events for youth from 5-18 years of age.
Established in 1991, UVic's Science Venture is a non-profit organization that offers hands-on, minds-on science, engineering and technology learning opportunities for youth entering grades 1 through 12. Programs include hands-on workshops, summer camps, school workshops, clubs, and community events.
Collaborations between the faculty and Science Venture include Leaders in Engineering Design (LED), and Go ENG Girl and Go CODE Girl.
AUVic - build autonomous underwater vehicles
AUVic is a group of Mechanical, Electrical, Software and Computer Engineering students from the University of Victoria that builds autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), submersible robots that are capable of completing intelligent tasks without aid from human operators.

BioDev - design wearable medical grade devices
BioDev is a student engineering team with a particular focus on biomedical technologies. We are developing and building designs for a wearable medical device that will measure and report vital signs quickly and non-invasively for use by paramedics and first responders, or for use in home monitoring. The goal of this project is not only to develop a novel and useful device, but also to provide an opportunity for students of engineering to become involved with biomedical technology development and to promote the emerging field of biomedical engineering.

UVic ECOSat - design, build, test a cubesat satellite
The UVic Satellite Design club, ECOSat is the University of Victoria student team participating in the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge (CSDC) and other Canadian Space Agency initiatives. The CSDC invites twelve universities across Canada to develop the experience and infrastructure for small satellite design.
Moving forward into the next round of the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge, and with more projects soon to come, The UVic Satellite Design club is seeking new members from all disciplines to join, design, build and test the many systems that will be essential for the Canadian Satellite Design Challenge, as well as other projects including an amateur radio ground station and an even smaller satellite!

Formula SAE - design, build and compete an open wheel race car
The UVic Formula Motorsport team is the UVic chapter of Formula Student, the largest student engineering design competition in the world. We are entirely student run. We design and manufacture most of the parts on our car, and we tune and optimize the systems to work harmoniously with each other to maximize the performance of our vehicle. FSAE gives it's members valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, and advanced engineering design and manufacturing.

Formula Hybrid - high-performance vehicle drive-train innovation and fuel efficiency
The University of Victoria’s Formula Hybrid team annually competes in the most complex and dynamic competition of SAE International’s Collegiate Design Series. The Formula Hybrid competition emphasizes drive-train innovation and fuel efficiency in high-performance vehicle applications while overcoming complicated system integration challenges. The team recently competed against the top 35 international competitors, placing first in the most challenging class as well as receiving three prestigious industry awards. Team members are from various academic disciplines including Computer Science, Commerce, and Electrical, Software, Mechanical, and Computer engineering. Members collaboratively work in interdisciplinary teams to research, design, fabricate, and test various applied engineering components. The Team’s organizational structure gives members the opportunity to be involved in all phases of development, in addition to progressing beyond their academic disciplines. Members are supplied with industry standard tools in a hand’s on supportive environment allowing them to apply their academic knowledge and co-op experience.

Robotics Club - design and fabricate a four-wheel land rover robot
The Robotics Club at the University of Victoria is a student run team that incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to designing a four-wheel land rover robot. The concepts, design, and fabrication of the Robot Club's products facilitate students of all background to think about exploration of the space ... the final frontier!

UVic AERO - design, build, fly unmanned aerial systems
UVic AERO is a group of approximately 40 students who build Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS's), and compete annually in the Unmanned Systems Canada Student competition. AERO achieved 3rd place in 2014 and 2nd place in 2015.
AERO aims to give students experience working in the quickly growing industry of aerial robotics. Members learn to apply their skills as they design and create software, circuit boards, and airframes while working in a large team with students from many different disciplines.
No experience is necessary and we accept members from any background or discipline.

UVic Rocketry - design, build, launch a rocket and payload to 9000+m
The UVic Rocketry (UVR) Team is a group of students who are passionate about rocketry and committed to developing their skills and knowledge in this field. This includes hands-on experience with propulsion, aerodynamics, composite structures, avionics and control systems, recovery systems, testing, and launch operations. The team welcomes members from all backgrounds and encourages collaboration between students in various fields within engineering, science, business, art, and other complementary programs
The team competes annually at the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) hosted by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA) in New Mexico. We are developing rockets to compete in both the commercial-off-the-shelf and the fully student-researched-and-designed propulsion system categories.

CSCU - representing students in Computer Science courses and programs
The Computer Science Course Union (CSCU) provides representation to UVic and the Faculty of Engineering on behalf of students in Computer Science degree programs and all students who are taking a Computer Science course. The CSCU also organizes events, including free movie showings, LAN parties for gamers, and workshops.

IEEESB - foster technical skills
The UVic IEEE Student Branch is a student-run organization that hosts numerous workshops for students throughout the year. We mainly focus on technical skills that we feel are otherwise left out of the engineering curriculum, such as soldering, circuit design, and circuit simulation. We also provide a lab space for all members to use freely for any school or personal projects.

LTD - promotes inclusivity, diversity and leadership
Leadership Through Diversity is a group of Engineering students that promotes inclusivity and diversity within the field. They encourage minority groups within the faculty, inclusive attitudes and interactions, and leadership opportunities for students. LTD runs events, including potlucks, discussion groups, hikes, scavenger hunts, crafternoons, and mixers.
