Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery (PRIMED) is an independent division of ACET, specializing in Marine Renewable Energy (MRE). PRIMED is partnering with communities on detailed field measurement and modeling for MRE including tidal, wave, and offshore wind resource assessment.

Contributions

PRIMED is a key collaborator within ACET’s Low-Carbon and Offshore Renewable Energy Technologies Strategic Research Area, leading or contributing to the following projects:

Research Areas

PRIMED aims to be the connective tissue between BC’s remote coastal communities and technology developers by providing expertise and guidance in 6 strategic research areas:

  • Resource Assessment and Characterization – Facilitating long- and short-term data collection and develop high resolution models to identify available resources and potential project sites.
  • Energy System Integration – Providing advanced energy systems modeling and technology emulation to understand how MRE can contribute to integrated energy systems.
  • Regulatory Reform and Policy Development – Incorporating the current state of knowledge and best practices into BC and Canada’s regulatory frameworks for MRE, while also helping to shape policy to enable the advancement of the industry.
  • Device Simulation and Modeling – Supporting early Technology Readiness Level technologies and projects by providing the necessary models and data to refine design and implement safe, reliable projects.
  • Demonstration and Operation – Identifying pathways forward to de-risk and cost effectively develop and operate MRE projects in BC.
  • Social Research – Ensuring that socio-economic and environmental considerations are built into current and future MRE aspirations at the community and provincial scale through a mixed methods approach.
