Fossil fuel-dependent communities in Western Canada sit at the centre of Canada’s energy decisions. A just and inclusive clean energy transition will depend on how well governments listen to these communities and how fast they deal with the forces working to slow down energy decarbonization.

ACET's stories highlight the people, partnerships and projects driving community energy transformation. From local collaborations to global leadership, each story reflects ACET's commitment to co-creating clean energy solutions that fit the local environment and serve generations to come.
Study to power First Nations energy sovereignty
Indigenous communities across Canada have worked for generations against the corrosive effects of colonialism to preserve cultures steeped in millennia of history while also preparing for a prosperous, sustainable future.
Sea change in BC marine energy
The Canadian Coast Guard is exploring a new generation of clean energy technologies to displace its existing diesel generators with support from three University of Victoria (UVic)-based research institutes as part of a new project announced last month.
Unique partnership advancing First Nations energy utilities
A unique partnership between clean energy leaders, researchers, the provincial government and multiple First Nations is accelerating Indigenous energy sovereignty and advancing equitable clean energy development across British Columbia.
The power of waves
A First Nation is trying to get back to its ancestral land through an ambitious project: harness the ocean to create energy.
Northern voices lead energy conversations
A first-of-its-kind effort to gain a detailed picture of the energy aspirations of small, rural and remote communities across northern BC has sparked new conversations that will help shape the next decade of clean energy development in the province.
Clean energy found in old coal mines
Cumberland, B.C. was built on coal mining—both literally and practically. Thousands of workers were employed and millions of tonnes of coal were exported over 80 years before the mines were shuttered, leaving deep holes in the ground and a deeper void in the village’s economy.

Why aren't we tallying the environmental cost of war?
The world’s militaries make a significant contribution to the climate crisis — by some estimates they account for over 5% of global greenhouse-gas emissions. Yet governments aren't obliged to report their military emissions, and without a formal reporting mechanism, Tamara Krawchenko, an Associate Professor in the School of Public Administration at University of Victoria, says there's a "structural blind spot" that needs to be fixed.
Why the world ignores military climate emissions
When delegates gathered for COP30 in Belém, Brazil in November 2025, they scrutinized various sectors of the global economy for their contributions to rising greenhouse gases. Agriculture, aviation, steel, cement — all were on the table. One topic not discussed was war.
Including fossil fuel communities in Canada’s energy transition
B.C.’s clean energy future depends on empowered communities
Curran Crawford: CleanBC review emphasizes the importance of measuring progress in ways that people can actually see and feel rather than focusing solely on abstract greenhouse gas targets.
Canada–Estonia partnership drives community‑centred clean energy
A new international partnership between institutes in Canada and Estonia is accelerating community-based clean energy transformation in the European Union, with benefits for island communities abroad and across Canada.

Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET)
Summerfest 2025
Summerfest is an annual community camp-out where members of the Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nation return to the ancestral village site from which the nation was displaced in the 1960s. Ensuring access to affordable, reliable energy is key to making that return possible.
