FAQ - Western Union GlobalPay for Students

Here is a list of some of the common questions that students have when using the Western Union GlobalPay for Students service for the first time.

How long does it take for my payment to be received by UVic?

  • This is the typical timeline from the day that you make your payment to Western Union Business Solutions at your bank:

payment timeline

  • Remember to take into account weekends and holidays when estimating the number of days your payment may take. Please note that there are times where it could take longer than this to process your payment.

When should I follow up? Who do I contact?

  • As with any payment system, the amount of time it takes can fluctuate, but if your UVic student account does not reflect your payment within 8 business days (i.e. NOT including weekends and holidays), you should follow up with Western Union Business Solutions.
  • Contact Western Union Business Solutions at studentinquiries@westernunion.com or 1-877-218-8829.
    • Please include your full name, student number, payment reference number, home country, and a copy of your proof of payment so that they can investigate your payment.
  • After you have contacted Western Union Business Solutions, you can follow up with the Tuition Fees office at tuition@uvic.ca. Please provide any information that Western Union provided you, plus your full name, student number, payment reference number, home country, and a copy of your proof of payment.

Why doesn’t my UVic student account show my payment?

  • If a reasonable amount of time has passed and your student account still does not reflect the payment you made to Western Union Business Solutions, you should contact studentinquiries@westernunion.com to inquire about your payment.

What if my bank says they don’t deal with Western Union?

  • There is no reason that a bank should not be able to complete your payment. Make sure that your bank understands that the payment is to ‘Western Union Business Solutions (USA) LLC’ which is a different corporate division than Western Union and its independent agents. You can contact the Western Union Business Solutions toll free number at 1-877-218-8829 for further support and clarification for your bank.
  • Western Union agent locations are a separate business division from Western Union Business Solutions and the GlobalPay for Students service.  If you take your payment instructions to a Western Union agent location, you will likely be turned away.

What if my quote expired before I was able to make it to my bank?

  • If your payment instructions have expired before you are able to make the payment at your bank, you must go back to the GlobalPay for Students website and request a new quote. If you make a payment using expired instructions, your payment will likely be delayed in being applied to your student account as it takes longer for your payment to be identified.

What if I made my payment with expired instructions?

  • If you made a payment with expired instructions, the payment will likely be delayed in being applied to your student account.  If you pay with expired instructions, the exchange rate for your payment will be different than your quote because the quoted rate is only valid for 72 hours.
  •  Please do not make a payment with expired instructions. Go to the GlobalPay for Students website and enter a new quote to get new payment instructions.

How do I pay if I am already in Canada but my bank account is in my home country?

  • The GlobalPay for Students service requires payment to be made at your bank, in person.  If you are unable to complete this process, discuss with your family whether they can complete the payment for you.

What if my bank says they can send a wire payment direct to UVic faster?

  • It is possible that a wire payment may be sent faster than sending your payment through Western Union Business Solutions.  However, this doesn’t take into account the time it takes for UVic’s bank to process the wire transfer or for the staff in UVic Accounting Services to apply a wire payment to your student account. Wire payments typically are received with incomplete reference information and it takes additional time for Accounting Services staff to identify the appropriate account to apply the payment to.

I made my payment on the tuition fee deadline. Is it late?

  • As noted in the timeline above, it typically takes 5 business days for your payment to be received by UVic and applied to your student account. If you make your payment at your bank on the tuition fee deadline, your payment will be late by the time it is received by the University. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that payments are received by the fee deadline, regardless of payment method.

Why can’t I track my payment?

  • There is no online payment tracking mechanism for students to be able to see exactly where your payment is at any given time. Contact Western Union Business Solutions at any time at studentinquiries@westernunion.com to find out the status of your payment.
