Restricting AI Agent Access to University Resources
October 13, 2026
Overview
New AI tools are making it possible for AI agents to act on behalf of a user, including signing into websites, accessing information, and performing tasks. These new agents have not been approved for use with university information systems. To protect the security and privacy of university data, these autonomous AI agents, such as OpenAI Dots and Meta Muse, are blocked from accessing university information systems.
What’s changing?
Starting on October 13, UVic Systems may block sign-in attempts from unauthorized AI agents. Depending on the AI tool, you may be redirected to contact the Computer Help Desk. If you believe that you’ve encountered this message in error, please report this to the or your IT support staff.
The Information Security Office continues to monitor this evolving area. To help protect university systems and data, UVic may disable a NetLink ID if it is used to provide an unauthorized AI agent with access to university systems until the issue can be reviewed.
University policy
Do not share your passphrase or multi-factor-authentication tokens with an AI tool.
UVic’s policy IM7200: Acceptable Use of Electronic Information Resources prohibits sharing passphrases. Sharing your passphrase or other sign-in credentials with unauthorized people or tools may result in your NetLink ID being disabled.
The university is continuing to evaluate the advances in AI, the availability of new tools, and how these changes intersect with university policy and AI guidelines. For more information about AI usage at UVic, please refer to the AI @ UVic website.
