Social Justice Studies
Social Justice Studies
The aim of the Social Justice Studies program is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the range of ways to address and engage with issues of social inequity and injustice in the contemporary world from a variety of disciplinary perspectives.
There are two program options: a Social Justice Studies Minor or General Degree, or a Social Justice Studies Diploma.
Social Justice Studies Minor/General
The interdisciplinary General and Minor Program in Social Justice Studies is offered by the Department of Sociology.
Students intending to pursue this General or Minor program should consult with the Social Justice Studies Director (sjs@uvic.ca). Students seeking to apply for the Diploma should contact the Division of Continuing Studies at 250-721-7860 or visit the Continuing Studies website.
The minor program requires successful completion of three required core courses (4.5 units) and five elective courses (7.5 units) chosen from pre-approved course offerings of participating and collaborating programs for a total of 12 units. To satisfy the interdisciplinary element of this program, it is required that no more than three units of electives may be taken from any one department or school.
Social Justice Studies Diploma
The interdisciplinary Diploma Program in Social Justice Studies is offered by the Department of Sociology in partnership with the Division of Continuing Studies.
The SJS Diploma requires a total of 15 units of coursework and can be taken as a stand-alone credential, or as a concurrent credential with a Certificate or Degree Program. Students need to apply through Continuing Studies for acceptance into the Diploma Program. Once accepted into the program, students are strongly encouraged to plan their program in consultation with the Director of Social Justice Studies (sjs@uvic.ca). For queries about the Diploma Program, please call 250-721-7860 or visit the Continuing Studies website.
The diploma program, offered through the Division of Continuing Studies, requires the successful completion of three required core courses (4.5 units) and seven elective courses (10.5 units) chosen from a pre-approved list of course offerings of participating and collaborating programs for a total of 15 units.
