Global Development Studies

This interdisciplinary minor program is offered by the departments of Geography and Political Science in collaboration with the Division of Continuing Studies. Learn more about the program, including areas of focus and potential careers.

Admission

This minor program can be added to your primary degree to broaden your studies. You can declare your minor after 1 or more years of full-time study at UVic.

Your academic advisor can help you plan your courses to ensure you meet the requirements of both your major and minor programs.

Program details

The interdisciplinary GDS Minor requires 12 units of coursework. You’ll take 3 units of lower-level courses, including GDS 201, and 9 units of upper-level courses, including GDS 300,  GDS 301 and GDS 400.

You'll also gain specialized knowledge in one of 4 global development issue areas in which UVic has expertise:

  • environmental sustainability and public health
  • human rights, democracy and gender
  • transnationalism, migration and mobility
  • literature, culture and society

Hands-on learning

You can participate in field schools, study abroad or work internationally through co-op placements. You may also earn course credit for volunteer work with community or international development organizations.
