Tl'ul'thut, Robert Morales, receives honourary doctorate
June 05, 2026
UVic Anthropology professor Brian Thom and UVic Law Professor Sarah Morales co-hosted a symposium on Wednesday, in celebration of the honourary doctorate being presented next week to Tl'ul'thut, Robert Morales.
Robert Morales is the long-time chief negotiator of the Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group and chair of the First Nations Summit Chief Negotiators. Thom, who has collaborated with Robert for over 25 years, led the nomination of this high recognition from UVic, citing the wide ranging impact of his work in Indigenous, Canadian, and International law.
The symposium brought together scholars, students, Coast Salish leaders, lawyers, scholars, students and others with experience in the BC Treaty Process to discuss their hopes for new directions in modern-day treaty, Indigenous legal orders, and International human rights.
UVic Anthropology joins the whole UVic community in congratulating Tl'ul'thut on this well-deserved recognition, and will be proud to call him Dr. Morales!
