George Clutesi exhibition nominated for BC Heritage Award

Huge congratulations to Dr. Andrea Walsh & Dr. Jennifer Robinson (ANTH alum/sessional/adjunct) & co-curator, India Young (RBCM Curator of Arts and Images/adjunct) and anyone else who helped with this exhibition.
 
George Clutesi: ḥašaḥʔap / ʔaapḥii / ʕc̓ik / ḥaaʔaksuqƛ / ʔiiḥmisʔap, has been nominated for a BC Heritage Award in Education Communications and Awareness. This exhibition created through the Visual Stories Lab was truly a remarkable project to be part of for 5 years. We are very grateful to everyone who helped make this possible including the Clutesi family, the nuučaan̓ułʔatḥ artists and scholars whose work featured in the show including Tommy Happynook and Dawn Smith, Survivors from the Alberni Indian Residential School who shared their memories of George with us, and our gallery partners, the Alberni Valley Museum, the Bill Reid Gallery, and the Legacy Art Gallery.
 
This full list of nominees for all BC Heritage Awards here. It is quite wonderful to see all the amazing projects listed here that celebrate culture in different ways from building restorations, to creative exhibitions, to passionate volunteers.
 
BC Heritage is also organizing a People's Choice Award this year. If you're keen, you can vote for the Clutesi exhibition and other heritage nominees at the link here. Our colleague from the Museum of Vancouver, Sharon Fortney has also been nominated! Voting is open until Friday, February 27, 2026.
 
BC Heritage will announce the awards on May 5, 2026.
