1. Assistant Professor in Combinatorics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Combinatorics, to commence July 1, 2020. We are particularly interested in candidates whose area of research is Algebraic or Probabilistic Combinatorics, or Discrete Optimization.

Applications from candidates in all areas of combinatorics are welcome.  We strongly encourage applications from women and other groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. In accordance with the university's equity plan and pursuant to Section 42 of the BC Human Rights code, preference will be given to women. Candidates from this group who wish to qualify for preferential consideration must self-identify. A documented record of improving the participation of underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences and an articulated plan to continue such activities will be considered an asset.

The University of Victoria provides an excellent and active research environment. As a member of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), UVic provides excellent opportunities for collaboration and postdoctoral support. The Department itself is very active in research areas within, or intersecting with, combinatorics, in particular combinatorial matrix theory, combinatorial designs, algebraic coding theory, algorithms and complexity, graph theory, combinatorial game theory, probability, optimization and others.  The successful candidate will find a supportive, diverse, and intellectually challenging academic environment at the University of Victoria.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the Mathematical Sciences. The successful candidate will have a strong record of research in Combinatorics, with demonstrated potential for establishing an internationally recognized research program, as demonstrated for example by a solid publication record in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals, and will have the potential for synergy with existing research themes in the Department. The successful candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and will demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring, so as to maintain and enhance the department’s high teaching standard.

The University of Victoria is located in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, at the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island. Founded in 1963, the University is ranked as one of the leading universities in Canada with a reputation for excellence in research and teaching. Victoria is one of the most scenic locales in Canada with a pleasant climate year round.

Faculty and Librarians at the University of Victoria are governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement. Members are represented by the University of Victoria Faculty Association.

Applications should be made through Mathjobs.org. A complete application will include a cover letter detailing interest in, and experience pertaining to, the position; a research statement; a curriculum vitae; and a teaching dossier. Applicants should arrange for at least four letters of reference to be posted to MathJobs in support of their application. At least one letter should address teaching and mentoring. Questions about this position are welcomed and can be addressed to the Chair of Mathematics and Statistics at mschair@uvic.ca .  The Department encourages applicants who have experienced career interruptions for parental or other types of leaves to apply.

Review of applications will begin January 3, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.

UVic is committed to upholding the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion in our living, learning and work environments. In pursuit of our values, we seek members who will work respectfully and constructively with differences and across levels of power. Postdoctoral positions

PIMS - Postdoctoral Fellow

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria is seeking candidates for nomination for a Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) Postdoctoral Fellowship, starting July 1, 2020. The field of research is open, but priority will be given to candidates whose research area aligns with current faculty expertise. The Fellowship is for one year and is renewable, contingent on satisfactory progress, for an additional year. The position is open to recent PhDs, or to graduate students who expect to receive a PhD by December 31, 2020.

The Department has nearly 30 research faculty members covering many areas of mathematics and statistics. There are also around 50 graduate students split between PhD and Masters programs. Further information about the Department may be found at: https://www.uvic.ca/science/math-statistics

Applications for the position should be made before November 20th 2019 on Mathjobs and should include: (i) a CV; (ii) a research proposal; (iii) a cover letter naming a proposed research supervisor in the Department; (iv) three letters of reference, addressing the research potential of the applicant. Ideally one or more of these should come from outside the institution where the candidate studied/is studying for a Ph.D.

This is a two-step process: the selected candidate(s) will be contacted by the potential research supervisor and will be invited to make an application to PIMS. Such an application must be supported by a UVic Faculty member. The salary will be at least 50,000 CAD annually depending on experience. Details of the PIMS post-doctoral program can be found at http://www.pims.math.ca/scientific/postdoctoral.
