Award for Research Excellence
The Faculty of Science Award for Research Excellence recognizes and rewards excellence in research by a faculty member of the Faculty of Science who is at an early stage of their career.
The award consists of a commemorative plaque and a cash prize of $1000, and the names of award winners will be permanently displayed on a wall plaque in the general office of the Dean of Science. This award is supported in part by a donation from the Quail Rock Foundation, as well as other donations.
Eligibility
- nominees must be within 15 years of receipt of their PhD
- nominees must have been faculty members in the Faculty of Science at the University of Victoria for at least 3 consecutive years at the time of their nomination
- both tenured and untenured faculty are eligible
- previous winners of the award are not eligible
Nominations
- nominations may be submitted by a UVic department or school
- one nomination from a given department or school will be accepted each year
- nominations may be kept in the pool for up to the end of the 15-year limit period after their original nomination year, although only 1 nomination per unit is allowed each year
- it is suggested that candidate dossiers kept in the pool be updated annually
- optional: the nominator(s) may wish to determine that the nominee is willing to let their name stand for the award
- a covering letter from the nominator, outlining why the nominee merits the award
- a standard UVic curriculum vitae
- letters from 2 referees, who must be from outside UVic and who are highly knowledgeable about the field of research of the nominee
The deadline for nominations is May 31 of each year. Nominations should be sent to lrudman@uvic.ca.
Selection committee
The selection committee for the award will be the Research Advisory Committee of the Faculty of Science, chaired by the Dean. The Dean will vote only in the case of a tie.
The committee normally includes one representative of each of the 6 units of the faculty. The competition will run if at least 1 nomination is submitted.
The selection committee may decide, after reviewing all of the nominations, that no candidate merits the award in a given year.
