New faculty members

I am delighted to announce that we will have three faculty members joining UVic Law this coming July!
David Milward:
David Milward, BA (Calgary), LLB (Alberta), LLM (Alberta), PhD (UBC), is an Associate Professor of Law with the University of Manitoba. He is Cree – a member of the Beardy's & Okemasis First Nation in Saskatchewan. His first book, Aboriginal Justice and the Charter, won the K.D. Srivastava Prize for best book published by U.B.C. Press in 2012, and was shortlisted for the Canadian Law & Society Association Best Book Prize in the same year. His second book, The Art of Science in the Canadian Justice System: A Reflection on my Experiences as an Expert Witness, was co-authored with the late Dr. Charles Ferguson. He assisted the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada with authoring the volume of its Final Reports that focused criminal justice. He also has numerous publications in the fields of criminal law, Indigenous justice, and evidence. In 2018-19, he will be teaching Legal Process, Transsystemic Criminal Law and a course in the JD program to be determined.
Sarah Morales:
Sarah Morales, JD (UVic), LLM (University of Arizona), PhD (UVic), PostDoc (Illinois) is Coast Salish and a member of Cowichan Tribes. She was recently promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, Common Law Section, where she teaches torts, Aboriginal law, Indigenous legal traditions and international human rights with a focus on Indigenous peoples. Sarah’s research centres on Indigenous legal traditions, specifically the traditions of the Coast Salish people, Aboriginal law and human rights. She has been active with Indigenous nations and NGOs across Canada in nation building, inherent rights recognition and international human rights law. In 2018-19, she will be teaching Legal Process and Torts in the JD stream, and responsible too for coordinating the special supplement to Legal Process for JD/JID students. She will also be developing two JID-specific courses for the second year of the program.
Geoff Loomer:
Geoff Loomer will also be joining us on July 1. Geoff taught here in spring 2017 on leave from his current appointment at Dalhousie University. He has a BSc in Economics from UVic, his LLB from UBC, and his BCL and DPhil from Oxford. He has taught at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University since 2009, and has served as Associate Dean, Graduate Studies, in that school. He also practised law for a little over 6 years with McCarthy Tétrault in Vancouver. Geoff is a productive researcher, especially in international and comparative taxation law and corporate taxation. His interests range widely. He has regularly taught Secured Transactions as well as courses in the area of taxation law.
