Brief Biography

Laurel Thomson is an actor, educator, voice teacher, director, and storyteller with more than twenty years of experience teaching acting and voice and more than fifteen years of professional performance experience. She has served as Head of Voice at the National Theatre School of Canada and has taught at institutions including the University of Ottawa, Dalhousie University, Bishop’s University, Champlain College, and York University. Her professional performance work includes engagements with the Stratford Festival, Bard on the Beach, SKAM, Montreal’s Youtheatre and Theatre Lac Brome as well as plays in the Vancouver Fringe Festival.

She has coached voice for Regina’s Globe Conservatory and for the NAC Indigenous Theatre as well as for Qaagiavuut in Iqaluit, participating in Qaggic and supporting the voice work of their drum dancers and performers.

Laurel holds an MFA in Theatre, a Diploma in Voice Teaching from York University, and a Professional Acting Diploma from the National Theatre School of Canada. Her pedagogical practice emphasizes embodied voice and the integration of voice, body, imagination, and text in actor training.

Laurel is of Métis & Scottish ancestry with family roots in the Red River communities in Treaty One Territory.
