Announcing Acting Dean Dr. Todd Milford

September 04, 2025

A portrait of Dr. Todd Milford. He is pictured in a hallway in MacLaurin Building, wearing a navy blue knitted sweater and looking into the camera lens. Todd Milford has been appointed as interim Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria for the next 18 months, serving through February 28, 2027.

This appointment reflects both his long-standing contributions to the faculty and his proven capacity to guide the community during a period of transition for the university and for education across Vancouver Island and the East Kootenays.

Throughout his career, Todd has demonstrated leadership that combines scholarly expertise with practical administration. His roles as Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Acting Dean, and Director of the Faculty of Education Statistical Consulting Service highlight his ability to step forward when needed and to bring people together across departments. These experiences have strengthened his institutional knowledge and shown his talent for building consensus.

In his research, Todd has contributed to science education, classroom assessment, and quantitative methods, producing more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and multiple books and chapters. His work demonstrates leadership in connecting evidence with practice, and his collaborative projects reflect a commitment to advancing education through shared knowledge and partnerships.

Todd’s leadership extends beyond the university. His contributions to Ministry of Education initiatives and his active roles in professional associations, such as the Science Education Research Group and the Association for Science Teacher Education, illustrate his capacity to link research and classroom practice. These roles strengthen both the profession and the broader educational community.

Since assuming the interim Acting Dean position on July 1, Todd has shown a thoughtful, collaborative approach. His guidance of graduate students and participation in key university committees, including his role as Co-Chair of the Academic Writing Requirement Review, reflect leadership grounded in listening, cooperation, and advancing institutional excellence.

At this moment of transition, the Faculty of Education looks to Todd not only as an interim leader but as someone who combines dedication, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose. His research-informed approach and steady leadership will guide the faculty with confidence and clarity into its next chapter.

What makes our faculty strong is the way we come together in support of learners, educators, and one another. My goal as Acting Dean is to support and connect our community so that each of us can continue contributing to the vitality of education and the communities we serve, while adapting thoughtfully to the challenges and opportunities ahead. I believe in the good work we will continue to do together.
