Teaching Assistant positions

Current TA candidates must be proficient in French and have knowledge of French Education.

Applicants who wish to apply for any of the teaching assistant (TA) positions listed below must complete and submit an application form and CV to Maureen Spizawka (edcdao@uvic.ca).

Important information

Deadline:

To ensure full consideration, your completed application and CV should be received by end of day June 14, 2024 for Summer 2024.  The application period for Fall 2024 will open approximately 10 weeks before the start of the term.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • Possess an acceptable undergraduate
  • Apply only to courses that you have good familiarity with the course material. Skills or other requirements (if any) are presented on specific course postings.

Summary of duties and responsibilities:

 The duties of a TA within EDCI may include but are not limited to:

  • teach/instruct classes based upon notes and support from the
  • meet regularly with the instructor to design and monitor
  • regularly attend class during
  • mark assignments (under the guidance of the instructor).
  • provide support during office hours for student
  • update data on the class Learning Technology

Other tasks may be added depending on the needs of the instructor and time available under the allocated hours.

Position Details:

Hourly Rate: $30.87 plus (MERC-Mandatory Employee Related Costs) 

Term of appointment from: Varies depending on course (see Available positions on next page)

Total hours: 20 to 40 per course (Hours to be confirmed on appointment.)

Effective September 1, 2023, for academic and scientific assistants. See CUPE 4163 collective agreement University of Victoria, Human Resources March 31, 2023.

Appointment selection:

Appointments will be made in accordance with article 13.02 (appointment procedures) and appendix A (variance 1) of the CUPE 4163 Component 1 and 2 Collective Agreement. Selection criteria will include qualifications and ability based on academic merit and related experience, the career and/or pedagogical value that the experience in a particular position will provide the student, the student's preferences, and other sources of graduate student financial support being received.

* For IED 373, preference will be given to:

  1. Qualified Indigenous candidates
  2. Those with experience in Indigenous contexts/communities or teaching Indigenous education

** Depending on enrollment, these positions may not be available.

 

How do I apply?

  1. Review the available positions.
  2. Complete the C&I TA application form.
  3. List on your application form any TA appointments held at the University of Victoria.
  4. Non-Canadian applicants must include a copy of their study permit or permanent resident card with their application If your study permit expires before the end of the appointment period, you must provide proof that you are in the process of renewing it (i.e. copy of your receipt from Canada immigration).
  5. Applicants may present supporting documents with their application (e.g. curriculum vitae). Such document(s) will not be accepted as a substitute for the standard application form noted
  6. Submit your application to the Curriculum & Instructor Administrative Officer, Maureen Spizawka (edcdao@uvic.ca).
  7. If you are not a C&I student at University of Victoria, you may want to notify your home department that you are submitting your application for consideration with C&I.
  8. Offers of employment will be sent to the email address that you provide on the application form sometime during the selection timeframe which begins one week before the start of the term and ends one week before the first scheduled lab session.
