About our Accessibility Committee

UVic’s Accessibility Committee includes faculty, staff and student representatives. We take efforts to ensure appropriate and inclusive representation from many areas of campus, including service areas. Accessibility is all of our responsibilities and alignment is essential.

Membership (2023/24)

At least half UVic’s Accessibility Committee members are people with disabilities or representatives of disability-serving organizations. At least one member identifies as Indigenous.

The Executive Director, Facilities Management and Dean, Faculty of Law co-chair the committee, which has representation from the following areas and groups:

  • CanAssist
  • Centre for Accessible Learning
  • Division of Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation
  • Equity and Human Rights
  • Facilities Management
  • Faculty of Human and Social Development (member-at-large)
  • Faculty of Law
  • Human Resources
  • Office of Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement (member-at-large)
  • Society for Students with a Disability
  • University Systems
  • University of Victoria Students’ Society
  • University of Victoria Graduate Students’ Society

Focus

The Committee consults and collaborates on initiatives and policy reviews to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities, both visible and invisible. A foundational focus is Accessible BC Act compliance.

In its initial year, the Committee (2022/23) worked to identify barriers as well as priorities to address those barriers. They discussed ways to consult and gather feedback and provided invaluable contributions to the Accessibility Plan's development.
