Install the VPN client: macOS

Supported for MacOS 11.x, 10.15, 10.14, 10.13 (only 64-bit is supported from 10.15+)

The Cisco AnyConnect client is a VPN client that supports multiple operating systems. The best way to install it is from the VPN server itself. It is best to uninstall any IPSEC client first (Cisco, Shrew, etc.) before installing the AnyConnect client.


Check if your computer meets the miniumum system requirements:

  • Your computer must be running a supported version of macOS (10.14+)
  • If you have previously installed any IPSEC client (Cisco, Shrew or other), uninstall it before installing the AnyConnect client.

 Visit, enter your NetLink ID and passphrase and then click Login


Click Continue to accept the terms of UVic's Acceptable Use policy IM 7200.


Select Download for macOS


The Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client for Mac will then automatically begin downloading. Once downloaded Double click on the file. The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Setup will start and you should see the following window. Click Continue to proceed.


Accept the user License Agreement in order to proceed, click Continue then after that click Install.

You may be prompted with administrator permission to install the program, if so enter your administrator credentials to proceed with the installation.

At this point, you may be prompted about enabling the System Extension for this application:

The installer will pop up an additional prompt explaining that you need to open Security Preferences in the System Preferences panel:

You may need to unlock the Panel by clicking on the Lock icon at the bottom of the screen, and then choosing the Allow option next to prompt to allow the "Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter" to run:

MacOS will then finalize the installation of the AnyConnect Software and prompt one more time asking if the Cisco AnyConnect Socket Filter can access network content. Click Allow to finalize:

The program will then complete the installation on to your computer. Once completed click Close. Now the program is installed. Go to your Launch Pad and open Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client to start the program.


To connect to VPN enter in the address bar and click Connect


The next window will ask for your UVic credentials, enter them as shown below. When finished click OK, then click Accept in the next window.


You will know you are successfully connected to the VPN when you see the following icon in your task bar as shown here:
