Enterprise Data Centre
UVic maintains two high-performance, secure enterprise data centres. We host and maintain databases, business applications, storage networks and other systems in the data centres. Much of UVic’s central IT infrastructure is run from them.
Hosting servers in our data centre provides:
- advanced physical security
- enterprise-level power, network and cooling infrastructure
- systems for monitoring access, security and performance
- low overhead costs for virtual machines (VMs) and shared database environments
- expert database and system administration staff
Research Computing Services can help if you need data centre services for research work.
Services
We can provide:
- dedicated and shared MySQL, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL database environments
- Linux and Windows VMs running on a VMware ESX private cloud
- system administration
- proactive system health monitoring and response
- incident response
- nightly backups of managed servers
- colocation for partner organizations
Costs
Costs can vary widely depending on the resources and performance you need. The base costs are:
- Dedicated database environments from $150 per month
- Shared database hosting from $0
- Virtual machines from $12.50 per month
- System administration from $75 per month
- Server colocation for external clients depends on scale and requirements
Servers that need more resources (like more CPUs and RAM for VMs), use more electricity or have complex admin requirements will have additional costs.
Service level agreements
We use service level agreements (SLAs) to define:
- the scope of the service (what kinds of support are and are not provided)
- our responsibilities as the provider of the service
- your responsibilities as the user of the service
- expectations for uptime, maintenance windows and response times for incidents
We create a unique SLA for each application or system we host or support in the data centre.
