macOS Golden Gate released

Apple has released Golden Gate (macOS 27), the latest operating system for Mac computers.

Golden Gate will be deferred on managed Mac computers until testing is completed. If you are using an unmanaged Mac, it is recommended that you do not upgrade to Golden Gate at this time until compatibility with software and services is verified.

This bulletin will be updated as University Systems works through testing Golden Gate.

If you already have Golden Gate

Newly purchased Apple computers may come with Golden Gate pre-installed. We recommend installing all available operating system and software updates to ensure the best performance and security.

Disable Optimized Storage

Golden Gate's Optimized Storage feature may move files from your local hard drive to iCloud.

Please disable Optimized Storage. iCloud is not approved for storing university data. OneDrive, SharePoint, home.uvic.ca and UVic network shares remain the preferred locations for storing university information.

Software compatibility

If you are considering purchasing a new Apple computer or upgrading to Golden Gate, verify that your critical applications are compatible before upgrading. We recommend using this application compatibility tool to review software support information.

Most software used at UVic is expected to support Golden Gate. However, software vendors release compatibility updates on different schedules. Some applications may be updated immediately, while others may require additional time to ensure compatibility.

Once Golden Gate is available, we will be testing the latest versions of commonly used software applications at UVic.

  • Note: Kyocera driver updates are often released several months after a major macOS release. Older Kyocera printers may not be compatible with Golden Gate.

Hardware compatibility

If you use external devices such as docking stations, monitors, printers, scanners or specialized peripherals, confirm that they are supported on Golden Gate before upgrading.

This is particularly important for older devices that rely on manufacturer-supplied drivers. Very old hardware may no longer be supported.

Upgrading your Mac to Golden Gate

If you receive technical support through Desktop Support Services (DSS), your department, or the Computer Help Desk, please contact them to discuss upgrade options.

If you plan to upgrade your Mac yourself, follow Apple's recommended upgrade process.

It is important that you back up your Mac before upgrading to reduce the risk of data loss should the upgrade encounter issues.
