Green vs. growth? Exploring British Columbia's energy transition trade-offs using integrated energy systems modelling

Linking CIMS energy-economy and COPPER electricity planning models, the study shows that net-zero policies lead to smaller GHG reductions when new fossil fuel projects like LNG and mining are proposed. To overcome this, the results call for substantially higher electricity capacity expansion, dominated by variable renewable energy and higher peak demand growth.

Accelerated infrastructure permitting and construction is essential to achieve decarbonization and economic development goals together.

Now published in Environmental Research Letters with a great team: Madeleine Seatle, Bradford Griffin, and Madeleine McPherson.
