Humboldt Research Award: deepens international collaboration
November 27, 2025
Director of UVic's Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) Oliver Schmidtke, has been awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Award (Humboldt-Forschungspreis) from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The award recognizes internationally leading scholars whose work has had a lasting impact in their fields and supports extended research stays in Germany. Valued at €80,000, the Humboldt Research Award is one of Germany’s highest academic honours and is granted to only a small number of researchers worldwide each year.
“Receiving the Humboldt Research Award at this moment of transition feels especially meaningful. As I conclude my term as Director of the Centre for Global Studies and begin a study leave year in Germany, I am grateful for the chance to deepen international collaboration and to develop new research partnerships,” says Schmidtke.
This recognition comes at a significant moment for CFGS, as Professor Schmidtke prepares to conclude his directorship at the end of 2025 and begin a sabbatical research year in Germany. Supported by the Humboldt Foundation, he will be affiliated with the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück, advancing collaborative work on migration, democratic resilience, and transatlantic connections.
Dr. Schmidtke is also a professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Political Science.
