Arctic Ecology Lab and Gwich’in Tribal Council Honoured with International Arctic Award
We are proud to announce that Dr. Trevor Lantz, Tracey Proverbs, the Arctic Ecology Lab and the Gwich’in Tribal Council (Sharon Snowshoe, Arlyn Charlie, and Kristi Benson) are the 2025 recipients of the Frederik Paulsen Arctic Academic Action Award. Their initiative, Nan guk’anàatii ejuk t’igwinjik (The land we are taking care of is changing), blends Gwich’in knowledge with scientific modelling to deepen understanding of landscape transformation in a rapidly changing Arctic.
The project builds on three decades of cultural documentation by the Gwich’in Tribal Council’s Department of Culture and Heritage and twelve years of collaboration with the Arctic Landscape Ecology Lab at the University of Victoria.
Presented annually by UArctic and Arctic Circle, this international award recognizes innovative projects that turn Arctic knowledge into action to address the impacts of climate change. The 100,000 euro unrestricted prize supports further outreach, engagement, and communication to expand the project’s impact.
