Physical geography field school

Dates:
This summer, we will be running two independent offerings of Geog 477:
GEOG 477 [A01] : August 23 - August 30, 2025
GEOG 477 [A02] : August 30 - September 6, 2025
The 2025 Geography 477 field camp is being held at Bridge Glacier in the Lillooet Icefield area, British Columbia Coast Mountains. This is a remote backcountry site and participants should anticipate variable weather conditions and long days exploring challenging terrain over the duration of the field camp. Access is by float plane from Tyaughton Lake. Participants require personal tents for accommodation.
Course description
This field school is comprised of one course worth 1.5 credits. Successful applicants will be registered in this course through special registration by the Department of Geography (students will not register themselves).
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Geography 477 – Field Studies in Physical Geography
Instructor: Shannon Fargey
Overview: The nature of scientific research in physical geography is examined through field and laboratory techniques. Includes a week-long field camp where basic approaches, methodologies and techniques are used to prepare a series of reports based on field data and collected samples.
Eligibility
We expect many more applicants than the 24 positions available (12 per course offering). Accordingly, we list the following eligibility information:
- Preference may be given to students who have completed more than one of the pre-requisites
- Preference will be given to students in their final year of study
- Preference may be given to students who identify this is a required course in their program
- This field school is physically demanding. Applicants must mention if they have accessibility needs that may affect their ability to participate.

Proposed Itinerary
This itinerary should be taken as tentative and is subject to change:
A01: Students will meet at Tyax Adventures Base at Tyaughton Lake no later than 10:00 am August 23. Assuming no delays in weather we will spend the late morning/afternoon ferrying our group to Bridge Glacier field camp. We should all arrive at the field camp by dinner time. We will spend the next 6 days exploring the area and collecting data for project work. We will depart Bridge Glacier field camp in the morning of August 30 and arrive back at Tyaughton Lake by late afternoon. Students will then make their way back to Victoria (or preferred destination). More camp and travel details will be sent out when you have been accepted into the course.

Assuming no delays in weather we will spend the late morning/afternoon ferrying our group to Bridge Glacier field camp. We should all arrive at the field camp by late afternoon. We will spend the next 6 days exploring the area and collecting data for project work. We will depart Bridge Glacier field camp in the morning of September 6 and arrive back at Tyaughton Lake by late afternoon. Students will then make their way back to Victoria (or preferred destination). More camp and travel details will be sent out when you have been accepted into the course.
Fees
Students pay regular UVic tuition plus field school fees. Field school fees can be paid by cheque, money order or cash only. Cheques and money orders should be made payable to the University of Victoria.
Payment can be dropped off at the geography main office (David Turpin B203) or mailed (cheques and money orders only; do not mail cash).
Field school fees:
- $200 deposit paid at time of application, plus:
- $800 paid by April 30, 2025*
*If the $800 is not paid by April 30, your spot will be given away to another student on the waitlist
Field school fees include:
- Group meals for a week
- Transportation (flat plane) to/from Bridge Glacier from Tyaughton Lake
Field school fees do not include:
- Tuition
- Transportation from Victoria to Tyaughton Lake (support coordinating carpooling and necessary logistics will be provided. Based on carpooling (4 per vehicle) this extra expense is estimated at ~$200.00 per person)
- Other expenses such any personal gear (e.g. tent, hiking shoes, clothing etc.) required for the course**

The field school fees have been subsidized by the Faculty of Social Sciences. There may be additional funding through scholarships and financial aid or the International Centre for Students.
