UVic Geography ICE Research Lab presents at conferences in Ottawa and Washington, D.C.
December 13, 2024
This week (December 9th-13th), UVic Geography professor Dr. Randall Scharien and his team at the ICE Research Lab visited Ottawa and Washington, D.C. while attending the ArcticNet Arctic Change and AGU (American Geophysical Union) 2024 conferences. During these events, they delivered a total of seven unique and impactful presentations showcasing their research on climate change and it’s effects on sea ice and ice sheets.
ArcticNet is Canada’s premier Arctic Climate Change conference and a hub for Arctic and northern research. This year’s conference featured nearly 600 presentations. Also in attendance in Ottawa was Geography PhD student Maeva Gauthier, whose presentation “1, 2, 3, Action!” considered the use of participatory and digital storytelling to engage and educate Indigenous youth in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT.
Meanwhile, the AGU, the world’s largest gathering of Earth and space scientists, convened over 25,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. This year’s theme, “What’s Next for Science”, featured a number of prominent keynote speakers, including Sharon Lavigne, founder of RISE St. James, and John Podesta, Senior Advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden.
Abstracts of the presentations can be found on the UVic Geography Facebook and Instagram page, or on the ArcticNet and AGU websites.
