Heather Norton
PhD student
Mechanical Engineering

BScEng (Queen’s University), MPhil (University of Cambridge, UK)

Area of expertise

Systems optimisation, renewable energy systems, negative emissions technologies

Heather completed her B.Sc.Eng. in Engineering Physics at Queen’s University in 2011, and her M.Phil. in Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge in 2016.

Heather has professional experience in software engineering, metocean risk management, and sustainability.  She has worked on several research and development projects focused on the optimisation of offshore wind power and climate change adaptation for the ports and harbours industry.

Heather started her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria under the supervision of Dr. Curran Crawford in July 2020.  She joined the Solid Carbon Project which seeks to optimise carbon dioxide capture and offshore sequestration using renewable energy.  Her research is particularly focused on sequestration technologies and opportunities for automation.

In her free time Heather enjoys reading, writing, and being surrounded by nature.
