Review of methodologies used to estimate alcohol health harms, analysis of low alcohol doses on health protection and comparison of drinking and alcohol-caused harms in Australia and Canada

Funding body

National Drug Research Institute (Australia)

Background

Methods used towards estimating alcohol-caused harms have important impacts on the results and, in turn, on resulting policy. This project set to understand the impact of differential methodologies used in estimating alcohol harms from low dose alcohol use, and in particular, from ischaemic heart disease, an important and prevalent alcohol-caused health condition.

Progress to date

In conjunction with our partners in Australia, this we successfully completed this project in 2020. Dr. Tim Stockwell visited Perth, Australia to present the study results, which have also informed national, provincial and local alcohol harms modelling, both in Canada and globally.
