Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

50th Aniversary Humanities Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding students entering the University of Victoria from Canadian secondary schools who are pursuing undergraduate degrees in the Faculty of Humanities.

CFUW Victoria Diana Morgan Scholarship in Humanities*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding women undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities.

Faculty of Humanities Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Humanities.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Aldyen Hamber Entrance Scholarship

Two scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students entering first year at the University of Victoria directly from British Columbia secondary schools. Preference is given to women students entering the Faculty of Humanities.

Greg and Tanya Kuhn International Student Award

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students who have demonstrated financial need. First preference is for students in the Faculty of Humanities, second preference is for students in the Faculty of Science.

First disbursement September 2023.

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Y.P. Heung Foundation Post-Secondary Scholarship

Value: $5,000 | Number: 5

Five scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Victoria who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need and/or are actively involved in community service. Applicants wanting to demonstrate community involvement must submit a letter of support (max 350 words) outlining their community service from a community group or a secondary school teacher or adviser. Preference is for at least one recipient to be a Canadian-born Indigenous student.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated in the Terms of Awards, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Alumni Association Humanities Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities.

Andrew Rippin Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are focusing on the study of religion and are enrolled in a program offered by the Faculty of Humanities. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

CFUW Victoria Diana Morgan Scholarship in Humanities*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding women undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities.

Judy Payne Memorial Award

One or more awards, of at least $1,000 each, are given to undergraduate students who are:

  • a declared minor/general, major or honours student in the Latin American Interdisciplinary Studies Program or the Latin American Literary and Cultural Studies Program, and
  • enrolled in the upcoming Summer Session or Winter Session, or who were registered in the previous academic Winter Session, in a Latin American Studies Experiential Learning class.

Part-time student are eligible (min. 6.0 units). Approval of the recipient(s) is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Faculty of Humanities; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Allardice Lancaster Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering the fourth year of an Honours program in the Faculty of Humanities. Academic standing and participation in university and community activities will be considered.

Donna Trenholm Staff Award in Humanities*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students who are members of CUPE 951 at the University of Victoria who hold a regular appointment and are taking one or more courses offered by the Faculty of Humanities.  Students will be chosen based on the highest cumulative grade point average on all courses taken at the University of Victoria. Undergraduate applicants must complete the online application by May 31st. In the case of graduate students, applications must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by June 15th. Approval of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Peter Liddell Award in Humanities Computing*

One or more awards, of at least $1,000 each, are given to undergraduate students in third or fourth year or graduate students in the Faculty of Humanities who have completed project within the context of a humanities course or research project that makes a significant creative or innovative contribution to humanities computing. Individual and team projects are eligible. In the case of a team project, the award will be divided equally among team members. For teams of undergraduate students, a majority of the students must be in fourth year. Graduating and part-time students (minimum 1.5 units per term for graduate students and registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms for undergraduate students) are eligible.

Examples of project types include, but are not limited to:
1. an on-line edition of a test demonstrating appropriate use of technology,
2. a website in lieu of a term paper,
3. text analysis research answering a research question,
4. novel applications of existing technology to a humanities research question.

Winning projects must fulfill the following criteria:
1. the project must be done as a part of humanities course or research project,
2. the project must have a faculty sponsor,
3. the project must be complete and working rather than a work-in-progress, designs do not qualify,
4. the electronic interface must function properly,
5. the interface must be visually attractive and
6. the project must demonstrate sound principles with regard to accessibility and digital humanities practice.

If the submission is a creative project, the student must submit documentation addressing 1) what research questions is being addressed and 2) how the project contributes to Humanities computing.

Applications must be submitted to humsassistant@uvic.ca by March 31. If the deadline falls on a weekend, the application is due the following Monday.

Approval of undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Approval of graduate recipients will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities.

Religion, Culture and Society Student Travel Enrichment Award

One or more awards, to a maximum of $1,000 each, are given to undergraduate students enrolled in the Religion, Culture and Society Program in the Faculty of Humanities to assist with expenses associated with study abroad, exchanges, field schools, or research. Students must submit a budget for the amount requested (maximum $1,000), a statement of no more than 350 words describing the purpose of the travel and its relevance to the student's program of study and one letter of support from an instructor familiar with the student's academic work. The deadline for applications is March 1 (for summer travel) and June 1 (for fall or winter travel). All application materials should be addressed and submitted to the Director, Religion, Culture and Society Program, Faculty of Humanities. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Thomas M. Hess Scholarship in Indigenous Language Revitalization*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students in either the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Education and who are enrolled in Indigenous Language courses or an Indigenous language program. Part-time students are eligible for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by a committee formed by the Department of Linguistics and will include members from both faculties.
